Practical Tips on How to Systematically Transit from a Job-Only Position towards Entrepreneurial Focus
By Elliott Omose (publisher “The Creative Income Journal”)
Unfortunately, your employer is not as interested in you as much as you would like to think! Put it this way, the truth is that “just as most employees work just about enough to get paid at the end of the month; your employer also pays you just about enough to keep you from quitting. The post you occupy at your place of work was created before you applied for the job in the first place and may still continue to exist even long after you have left. As you can see, the post was created primarily for the benefit of that company and not necessarily with you in mind.
I needed to be this blunt in order to awaken you to the new realities which the current economic challenges have brought on every one of us, especially those in paid-employment. I’m not in any way trying to get you to start undermining your job, far from it. Except that, in my field as a Business Consultant, the shocking overwhelming impression I’m getting from the everyday man on the street is that of the belief that suggests “oh, I can’t wait for the economic crunch to be over and for things to return to how they were”. WRONG! If anything, history has taught us that with any major global impact of this nature comes a major paradigm shift, also. What that means is, if you go to sleep now waiting for when things will return to normal, you may discover by the time you finally wake up that you are already in the evening hours of your life.
PARADIGM SHIFT
Simply put, a paradigm shift is a term used to describe a change which refers to a move away from how things have always been done. The almighty banks have failed, the multi-national corporations are falling apart before our very eyes, Investing is a no-go for some time to come, our so-called economic experts have all gone to hide, pension schemes are in tatters, and Job-security is a thing of the past. Only one thing is about to emerge at the other side of this on-going economic shaking the Concept of Individual Entrepreneurship. We are moving from the age of the employee where you choose to work for an employer all your life, into the age of the Entrepreneur, the free agent where you will need to be more than just an employee. From the age of life-long employability to the age of life-long entrepreneurial creative productivity, and the biggest mistake you can ever make right now is to sit back and believe you work for anyone else but yourself. You are now the president and CEO of your services corporation, with only one employee – YOURSELF and for the rest of your life your job is to Identify, Develop and Package yourself into an entrepreneurial service effectively, so as to maximize your Value ……..and be able to enjoy a high standard of living, accomplish all your goals in life and retire financially independent. It is my belief that at the end of the on-going economic shift the way we do business would have changed forever, and the concept of smaller businesses will gain greater ground, creating a new class of wealth producers. Every economic paradigm shift has ended up producing a new group of what I call wealth producers and that’s where most of the successful individuals across the globe today were made. They saw the shift coming, got ready for it, and the rest is history.
HOW TO TURN YOUR LEMON INTO LEMONADE
You are faced with one of two choices; sit back and allow the storm of the on-going economic crisis blow you to where it wants or, the second choice of waking up now and seizing the opportunity irrespective of how badly affected your case may be.
PRACTICAL STEP 1 – DEVELOP AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MIND
It all starts with this all-important principle of personal development. Too many people today sit back and live the rest of their lives for a 6am-5pm job. Begin to see yourself more than that job and realise there’s more to you than that job. You don’t have to quit your job but start on the life journey of self development by:
a) start to read books and listen to audio materials on money, entrepreneurial mind-set, success, management etc
b) Pick two or three mentors who you have grown to admire consistently. Each time you heard about them or seen them on TV you have always felt nothing but admiration. Simply make it your assignment today to buy and read all he/she has written, and above all, study the principles behind his/her success.
PRACTICAL STEP 2 – TURN-ON YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL CREATIVITY
The best I have discovered from my 15 years of consistently studying the secrets of the Rich and Successful is that people become “success” primarily because they moved into their areas of pre-disposition a.k.a core-genius. Here’s an assignment for you; take a pen and write down all the successful people you know, and suddenly one thing stands out; they became so good at doing a particular thing better than everyone else around them. Check further and you will find it is that thing they are doing better than everyone else around them which brought them that success. Being better than anyone else is more than practice, it’s connected with your pre-disposition – your areas of core-genius. Think of J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter, Anita Roddick of Body Shop, and so on. I call it signature entrepreneurial idea. There’s more to you than only-a-job.
